DEALING with the control of livestock import and export, Mr C. A. Cockbill, principal of the import/export branch of the Ministry of Agriculture's animal health division, said that regulations were on the way to control the movement of dirty livestock lorries into and out of the UK.

Arrangements were also being made to reduce the amount of paperwork relating to exporting animals that drivers would have to carry.

These were expected to come into effect later in the year.

Powers were to be taken to detain a dirty livestock lorry coming into the country and direct it to adequate cleaning facilities to be cleaned at the operator's expense. Otherwise, it would be directed immediately out of the country.

Cleaning facilities

A list of cleaning facilities available in the UK, France and Belgium was being compiled by the authorities and this would be made available, shortly.

By this means, it is hoped to ensure that foot-and-mouth disease was not brought into the country by animal droppings.

Currently, drivers had to possess a number of documents when carrying livestock for export. These included veterinary evidence of health and so on as well as the ususal export documents. These different pieces of paper had to be obtained from a number of sources not always near at hand. A simplified system would combine all this into one form.
