By 1963 the Great North Road will be either three-lane or dual-carriageway from end to end, claimed Mr. John Hay, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, at the annual dinner of the Road Haulage Association, in London last week. He was responding to the demand by Mr. R. N. Ingram, national chairman of the Association, for expenditure of at least £250m. a year on roads.

Some 70 miles of this road were already dual-carriageway and another 74 miles were under construction, said Mr. Hay. Preparatory work on schemes to widen those lengths of Al, between London and Newcastle, which were at present three-lane only, were proceeding, he added.

Referring to the future of the railways, Mr. Hay said that the views of the R.H.A. had been passed to the group, headed by Sir Ivan Stedefard, which had been set up to advise the Government on this matter.

The battle to avoid nationalization of road haulage had been won, he continued. Government and hauliers must now show that this step was a correct . one, because the country expected a vigorous and efficient industry. The Government would give their backing by providing a first-class trunk road network.
