CAPABLE of operating at up to %--o 3 m.p.h. in water, a new vehicle is at present undergoing tests with the United States army. It is called the Goer, and can carry a 15-ton payload under exceptionally difficult cross-country conditions, as well as while afloat. Four vehicles of this type have been built by LeTourneauWestinghouse Co., Peoria, Illinois, and the design is basically similar to that of the Tournapull earth-moving tractor.
The driving section of the Goer has two wheels only, and is articulated to the trailing, load-carrying section, the rear wheels of which are driven also to provide maximum traction. The driving unit has a V-8 oil engine and five-speed main gearbox, whilst the trailer wheels are powered through an electric drive system. Integral construction is employed to help give maximum buoyancy, and single lowpressure tyres are fitted.
MORE RELIANCES ORDERED THE East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., has placed a further order with A.E.C.. Ltd., for 30 Reliance underfloorengined single-deck passenger chassis. When completed the company will have nearly 200 of these vehicles on the road. The new coaches will have 41-seat express-pattern bodywork, although the coachbuilding contract has not been awarded.
