A MOBILE workshop installed with V.H.F. radio and fully equipped to deal with most breakdowns and emergencies has been introduced on the northern end of M1 and on the M45 Birmingham link road.
The workshop, which belongs to Mr. Dennis Lake, owner of the George Service Station, Kilsby, Northants, has a crew of two, who operate a 24-hour service. They keep a roving commission on the new highways, and maintain radio contact with the Kilsby headquarters.
Running in support of the workshop are an Austin A55 pick-up owned by Mr. Lake, and a Thames 15-cwt. tyre transporter operated by Messrs. Tubby Enterprises, Braunston. Both carry V.H.F. radio sets. The travelling workshop is based on a converted Maudslay Matador equipped with an A.E.C. oil engine.
Some 40 concerns now rely on Mr. Lake in the event of a breakdown, and the police and Automobile Association regularly telephone with information, particularly when lorries loaded with perishable goods are involved.
