A PPROVAL _has been given for a car

parking plan at Harrogate which will cost nearly /100,000 and provide free space for more than 800 vehicles. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government, however, will not permit half of the Royal Hall Gardens to be used for the purpose. This part of the gardens should be retained as an amenity adjunct to the Royal Hall and Exhibition Hall, it is stated.

Consenting to the eastern half of the gardens being used as a car park the Minister says it should be possible to have parking on more than one level. Three-level parks would offset the loss of the rest of the land.

TRUNK ROAD WIDENING

ONE of Sheffield's main trunk roads to the north, Barnsley Road, is to be widened and converted into a dual carriageway. Mr. David Cathels, senior planning assistant to the city engineer, stated at a public inquiry, last week, that plans were already in hand, The highway is to be widened to 80 ft., which is almost double its present width.

He was giving evidence for Sheffield Corporation at an appeal by Mr. G. H. Sawer, 212 Barnsley Road, engineer, against the corporation's refusal to allow him to convert the property.

MOTORWAY REPORT PUBLISHED

AREPORT on the traffic-bearing and economic potentialities of the London-Birmingham motorway by the Road Research Laboratory and Birmingham University has now been published by the Stationery Office at 5s. 6d. It is known as Road Research Technical Paper No. 46.

WORKMEN are now waterproofing the lining of the Dartford-Purfleet Tunnel under the River Thames before commencing the concrete road deck. As a further step in the £11m link scheme between the road systems north and south of the river, the Minister of Transport will shortly invite tenders for the construction of the southern approach road to the tunnel,

MASTER PLAN TO SAVE LONDON

AMASTER traffic plan produced by an " upper-tier " authority between the London County Council and the Government could save London from traffic disaster. .Six town planners, architects and engineers told this to members of the L.C.C. and officials from 28 Metropolitan boroughs and provincial cities at County Hall, London, on Tuesday.

The experts were all prize winners in the "New Ways of London" competition held by the Roads Campaign Council. Every prize-winning scheme advocated motorways below and above ground, areas for pedestrians only and special parking facilities.
