ASUCCESSFUL application was made, at Edinburgh on Monday, by Mr. John Gray, Rosebank Garage, Slarnannan, who sought a new A licence for one vehicle of 5 tons, two articulated units of 6 tons and two semi-trailers of 5 tons. The normal user sought was " goods for Jones and Campbell, Ltd., Larhert, in the Southern Scotland Area, England and Wales." An offer to surrender three contract-A licences, in the event of a grant, was made by Jones and Campbell, Ltd., ironfounders, who supported the application.

Mr. Gray gave evidence of increased traffie and of difficulty in hiring suitable contractors. Mr. Alex. Reid, transport manager for Jones and Campbell, said that the products were shipped unpacked and demanded careful handling. The increased use of pallets was an important feature, as vehicles had to be designed to take pallets. The fact that railway wagons would not take pallets and the fast safe return of these pallets, which cost £7 each, were important points.

For British Railways, who objected, Mr. A. B. Wilkinson argued that the result of the proposals wduld be to give increased capacity. But, Mr. W. F. Quin, Scottish Licensing Authority, pointed Out that Jones and Campbell obviously did not want to be bothered with vehicle operation. The cost of contract-hiring was another possible reason, he added.

He granted the application with a normal user "goods for Jones and Campbell, Ltd., 90 per cent., with 10 per cent. other goods as required."
