hill 1 grazings on the Isle of Skye for wintering on the pastures of Easter Ross, Nairn and Moray, took 30 hours by rail, but only eight hours by road, the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority was told last week when Mr. Ewen McCrae, Olenbrittle, Skye, applied to extend his licence.
It was contended on behalf of British Railways that they had spent large sums on improving facilities at the Kyle of Lochalsh. Road transport would cut into the need for these facilities and entail a loss of revenue.
A short-term licence to cover the next wintering period was granted.
HIGH-LIFT DUAL-PURPOSE 1-TON TRANSPORTER
A HIGH-LIFT pallet transporter, the •
Portapal, has been introduced by I.T.D., Ltd., 95-99 Ladbroke Grove, London,. W.11. It can be used to lift and transport standard two-way and four-way single-faced pallets, as well as the type of stillage normally carried by a jack truck.
The minimum closed height is 31 in. and the lift height is 6 in., which is adequate for lifting and transporting stillages having a height to the underside of the decking of up to 81 in. It is believed to be the only example of a dual-purpose 1-ton transporter of its type.
Asthe pump used has no glands below the oil level, there is no chance of oil leakage, an important feature wherever scrupulous cleanliness is essential.
ADVANCED TANKER IN SERVICE A SPECIALLY designed articulated
tanker, believed, to be one of the most advanced in the country, has been placed in service by P. Hawkesfield and Son, Ltd., to deliver burning oil. The tractor is a Leyland Comet with a fivespeed gearbox and a two-speed rear axle.
The 2,500-gallon four-compartment tank was built by Darham Industries. Ltd., and is lagged with insulating material. A rear compartment houses a pump and controls driven by a shaft from the tractor gearbox.
A new design of coupling is stated to afford greater flexibility between the tractor and semi-trailer, reducing stresses on the tank when operating over uneven roads.
SAVING PETROL
A FUEL-ECONOMY device in which Pt the fuel-air mixture is said to be heated by electrical means before being drawn into the cylinder, is being developed by Dri-Gas Inductions, Ltd., 81 Jack Lane, Leeds, 10.
Tests so far carried out on private cars have shown excellent results; not only has there been a saving in fuel, but the general road performance is said to be improved.
