last week, the Minister of Transport has made it clear that he is against the principle of bus operators charging double fares on Christmas Day.

Rejecting an appeal by East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., against a decision of the Yorkshire Licensing Authority refusing them permission to charge double fares on Christmas Day, he stated that it would be contrary to the general principles at present governing the fixing of fares to consider in isolation the cost of providing those services.

Christmas Day services, the decision went on, should be "regarded as unremunerative services of a kind which it is usual for operators to provide, and which are taken into account in fixing the general level of the operators' fares."

The appeal was heard by Mr. A. N. C. Shelley in January.

CANNOT SOLVE LABOUR PROBLEM

Vsimply cannot compete with ages being paid for unskilled labour, and; what is more, we don't know how we can combat this shortage,

now growing very serious." These remarks were made last week by Mr. W. G. Copestake, deputy general manager of Birmingham Transport Department, about the shortage of bus workers because of the attraction of higher pay in other industries.

The department needed nearly 1,000 crew members. About one bus in 10 was prevented from leaving its garage because of lack of a crew. The maintenance programme was kept up by engineers working overtime.

WRONG OIL, BRAKES FAILED TSE of the wrong kind of oil in the brake reservoir was stated before the Bilston magistrate, last week, to have been the cause of a braking failure sustained by a 5-ton lorry arCoseley. The lorry careered for over 600 yd. and damaged three other vehicles.

The driver was fined £5, with I8s. 4d. costs, for driving with an inefficient braking system, and his employer was fined £8 for permitting the man to drive the lorry.
