THE European Parliament approved a resolution in Strasbourg this month which calls for priority to be given to railways over roads in expenditure designed to improve the EEC's transport infrastructure,
reports our Brussels correspondent.
According to the resolution submitted by the Parliament's Transport Committee, the railways must be given preference because they save more energy.
Railways use only 2.7 per cent of the oil consumed in the transport sector against 81.4 per cent for road vehicles, argued the author of the report, German Social Democrat Volkmar Gabert.
A growing number of MEPs are, in fact, losing patience with the Council of Ministers for what they allege is negligence in failing to implement a common transport policy.
Dissatisfied MEPs are now threatening to take the Council of Ministers to the EEC's Court of Justice for what it terms 'insufficiency'.
