Well, for one thing, it's not pig urine (as some have claimed on web forums). It is the trademarked name for a 32.5% solution of urea (CH4N20) in demineralised water, as defined by the international standard IS022241 for AUS (Aqueous Urea Solution) 32.
Urine does contain urea, and the association was difficult to shake off, so 10 years ago the marketing men got to work and AdBlue was the result — at least in Europe and most of the rest of the world. The trademark belongs to the German automobile industry association (VDA), and any company calling its product AdBlue has to meet strict quality standards. In the US, it often goes by the rather prosaic name of Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF.
