skip haulage business has been given a suspended 90-day prison sentence and ordered to carry out 250 hours' community service for breaches of an environmental permit.
In a prosecution brought by the Environment Agency (EA), under the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010, Dartford Magistrates' Court was told about the site in Gravesend run by Gurbinder Sall (operator of Sall Skips, with an 0-licence for four vehicles). The agency identified 67 breaches of the permit since a previous court case involving Sall Skips in September 2009.
Many of the breaches were related to the same issues for which Sall had been previously prosecuted — the heights of stockpiles of waste greatly exceeding the permitted limit, and the litter netting and bay walls at the facility in need of repair or replacement.
In June 2012, Sall was issued with a revocation notice that required him to stop operations and remove all waste from the property. However, visits from EA officers in October 2012 revealed that little progress had been made.
A further inspection in November 2012 found that levels of waste at the site had actually increased.
