• Vauxhall will start selling Renault Trafics under its own name early next year. in a deal which will lead to a joint-venture Renault/GM panel van by the turn of the century.
Renault and General Motors Europe have signed a letter of intent under which Renault will supply GM's Vauxhall and Opel brands with Trafics, until an all-new design covering the 2.52.8-tonne GVW range is developed for joint production around 2000. By 1998-9 Renault's Bafilly plant should be supplying GM with a 2.8-3.5-tonne panel van. This is thought to be the X70 design, developed from the Excel Renault/Dal project which was halted when Daf wem into receivership in 1993.
The introduction of the Trafic to Vauxhall's range will mean the end of the isuzu-derived Midi: the Vauxhall version of the Trafic will be differentiated from the Renault product by distinctive badging and trim.
