/ Heavy truck builder UMpower is supplying 10 6x6 tractive units and rigid heavy-equipment transporters for work on Middle East oilfields. The Watford-based company says they are the biggest civilian trucks exported from Britain since the early 1980s.
The S24 Contractors use high-flotation tyres and wheels with an overall width of 2.9m. The 5.42m-wheelbase tractive units will pull low-weight semitrailers over sand. Both vehicles have GVWs of 45 tonnes and use 12-litre 269kw (360hp) Volvo Penta engines driving through ZE six-speed gearboxes.
Heavy-duty leaf-spring suspension gives 10° of lateral articulation on each axle to improve mobility over difficult terrain, says Unipower.
It will not reveal the Contractors' final destination.
Unipower bought the designs and goodwill of the former Scammell manufacturing arm of Rover in 1988.
