A HEAVY DUTY 6 x 4 tipper for off-road operation was introduced by Fiat at a truck test day held at Silverstone for UK journalists. Operators will have their first chance to see the new model at the RHA Tipping Convention at Harrogate in July.

The Fiat 300 PC is designed to operate at 30 tonnes (29.5 tons) gvw off-road and can be run on-road, within C and U Regs, at 22.4 tonnes (22 tons) gvw. The tipper has 12.00-20 tyres, the front axle is design plated to 7.5 tonnes (7.4 tons), and the rear bogie to 24 tonnes (23.6 tons).

Italian-built Romanazzi three-way or conventional rear-end tipping bodies are standard and unladen vehicle weight is around 11.2 tonnes (11 tons) depending on body. The same engine, twin 356mm (14in) dry-plate clutch and synchromesh splitter gearbox from the 619TI tractive unit is specified for the 300 PC, but the gearbox ratios have been altered. The ratios are 6.18, 4.52, 3.41, 2.49, 1.88, 1.37, 1.00, and 0.73 to 1 forward and 5.28 and 3.86 reverse.

Maximum engine output is 176.5kW (240bhp) at 2,200rpm (BS AU141a) and torque 901Nm (6581bft) at 1200rpm (BS AU 141a).

The double-drive rear bogie has single-reduction with hubreduction axles and a third, lockable, differential. Two axle ratios are available, 8.75 or 9.41 to 1.

Single-rate semi-elliptic leaf springs with double-acting dampers are fitted at the front axle. The rear bogie has dual rate springs, torque reaction rods and rocking beams, and it is located by swinging arms between the chassis and differential housings.

The channel-section chassis has •a riveted construction except for the first and last cross-members which are bolted on. The chassis is flitched over the bogie position.

Steering is power-assisted worm and roller, and the full air brake system features a pedal-operated service/emergency brake with independent circuits to each axle. T service/emergency system c also be operated from a ha valve in the cab.

Parking requirements k met by a mechanically appli transmission brake, and exhaust brake is specified.

The vehicle has a stanct sleeper cab but it is und stood that a short cab is ain able as an option.

Fuel tank capacity is I litres (39.6gal).

Spoked wheels are fitted standard.
