• A Leicestershire haulier was fined just £5 for overloading by two tonnes after a court heard he had invested more than £30,000 in weighing equipment.
Nigel Aitken, trading as Aitken and Merry Agricultural Haulage Contractors, pleaded guilty to exceeding the 38,000kg gross vehicle weight of his Volvo FL10 tipper by 2,020kg.
Loughborough magistrates heard that the offence was discovered by Trading Standards officers when the vehicle was delivering grain to the cattle food manufacturer BOCM Pauls in Shepshed.
Anton Balkitis, defending, said Aitken had installed electronic weighing equipment on each of his 13 vehicles over the past five years at a total cost of more than £30,000.
He added that the 20-year-old Oakham business had no recent convictions for overloading and the driver involved in the offence had since been dismissed.
The court fined Aitken .£5 with £60 costs.
