Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The new Scan-Tech medium-range profile cutter, made by Technicut, is aimed primarily at the steel industry but can be easily adapted for a variety of applications. It can be operated as a conventional optical following machine and then subsequently upgraded to a high level of computer control.

Other features are heavyduty co-ordinate drive, automatic pattern catch and speeds suitable for oxygen/gas, plasma and laser cutting.

When the machine is equipped with computer control, the console is mounted within easy reach of the operator. The controller can programme itself from an optical trace, use a library of programmed standard shapes or will accept preprogrammed cartridges. Operation from a centralised CAD/CAM work station via a DNC (distributed numerical control) link is a further option.
