HOW REFRESHING to read your recent article about Ulsterbus and in particular to note the comments of its managing director Werner Heubeck.

1. Ulsterbus is able to put a bus (Bristol R ELL or the road for £3,000 less than anybody else.

2. Experience has shown that for city and tour work the Gardner-engined buses return 121/2 per cent better fuel consumption than comparable buses with other engines.

3. The move in Britain towards the Leyland National as the standard city bus is not in the public interest and does not give the best possible value for money.

Most Bristol enthusiasts will agree with every word of this successful operator of the RE that it has proved itself to be the best British rear-engined singledecker. Even more tax-payers, who are thoroughly fed up with subsidising Leyland, will wonder why the National Bus Company has not standardised entirely on Bristol chassis with Gardner engines and ECW bodies for all of its vehicles and not just a proportion of its double-deckers. Given practical support, these British companies could increase production so that we do not have to look overseas for economical, reliable and long-lasting vehicles.
