• The first production model of the dual-floor non-tipping semi-trailer, designed for carrying free-flowing materials in bulk, has been delivered by Seadyke Freight Systems Ltd of Wisbech to Walpole and Wright Ltd, a grain merchant. Of frameless construction, the aluminium body is based on Rubery Owen-Rockwell 20-ton widespread tandem-axle running gear.
While the prototype that was exhibited at the East of England Show two years ago had a length of 35ft, the production model is a 40-footer and has a number of new features. As in the prototype, discharge by gravity is provided by raising the hinged floors to act as internal hoppers. In the case of the latest vehicle the material is fed into three external hoppers and thence by a full-length conveyor belt to an outlet from which it is discharged by gravity or transferred to a suction line.
Joloda tracks provide for the movement of pallets when the floor sections are in the lowered position. Four loading hatches are located in the roof and there are van doors at the rear. A payload of about 20 tons of malt, barley or corn can be discharged by gravity in about 5min.
Since it was first exhibited in 1971 the prototype vehicle has been employed by the Bairds Malt Company and is said to have given trouble-free service.
