• Of the 37 urban areas in 23 American states required to submit plans to meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards set under the Clean Air Act, only 18 have so far been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Under the Clean Air Act, transport control measures are required where controls on stationary sources and exhaust emissions standards are inadequate to ensure keeping to certain ambient standards.
The EPA has also announced that state and local authorities must assess the air quality impact of new facilities which could generate a significant increase in road traffic and they must also identify areas where traffic is likely to increase to an extent where ambient air quality standards might be exceeded during the next 10 years. Plans for dealing with these projected problems must also be submitted.
