• Eighteen electric traits have been supplied by Harbilt Electric Trucks and Vehicles of Market Harborough, Leicestershire, to SNCF — the nationalized railway system in France. They are being used in depots and sidings for topping up the storage batteries which supply the lighting and heating on main line trains.
The deal was negotiated by Harbilt's French agents, Societe Olcoven of Lyons, who have built on to the chassis of the trucks glassfibre tanks to hold either 480 or 700 litres of distilled water. This is piped to the individual cells of the batteries on the trains by an electric pump which is energized by the truck's own traction battery. The trucks will be located at Paris, Nice, Marseilles, Lille and other main centres.
