• The Italian Fiat company revealed to CM this week its preliminary plans for marketing commercial vehicles in Britain. A truck sales division is being set up and will initially be offering the 5.5-ton-gvw Model OM 55, the 7.5-ton-gvw OM 75, the 619T tractive unit plated for 38 tons gcw and the 684 tractive unit for 32 tons gcw.
Mr G. Padrini, who was responsible for setting up the truck sales organization for Fiat Deutsch in Germany, where 3000 commercials are now sold each year, will be general manager of the new truck division at the Brentford headquarters of Fiat (England) Ltd. The general sales and marketing manager will be Mr David Somerville who has been marketing manager for cars in the UK since. he joined Fiat in 1964; and the executive in charge of the technical side of marketing will be Mr A. J. P. Wilding, who has been chief engineer of the Freight Transport Association since June 1971. Tony Wilding was previously with Commercial Motor for
11 years, and was technical editor from 1964.
The trucks will be imported through Liverpool and the pre-delivery inspections will be carried out at a depot in Warrington where a spares store is being set up.
The models 55 and 75 are examples from the rationalized Fiat range introduced last year and have a 90 bhp engine and wheelbase lengths of 2.6m, 3m and 3.6m. They are made in truck, chassis and chassis /cab versions.
The 619T (of which road impressions and some test figures appeared in CM on December 29 last year) is a two-axle tractive unit with 13.8-litre six-cylinder 260 bhp diesel. It will be rated for a maximum of 38 tons, but rigid versions sold in Italy are used with trailers at up to 44 tons gcw.
The Model 684 is also used as a rigid for drawbar work in Italy but in the UK will be offered as a 200 bhp 9.8-litre two-axle tractive unit at 32 tons gross. Impressions of the 684 model were published in CM on July 211972.
