Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A considerable overall increase in traffic levels during the first six months of 1973, compared with the same period last year, is recorded in the latest survey of traffic and rates prepared by Freight Information Services.

All hauliers are benefiting from the increase in traffic but particularly those connected with the building industry, imports and exports, bulk liquids, engineering products and temperaturecontrolled traffic. In all these sectors, the survey shows hauliers' turnover has increased by between 20 and 30 per cent.

Most hauliers had a mid-year increase of about five per cent during 1972 and since April 30, when the price freeze restrictions were eased, there have been widespread though modest increases in rates.

Twelve road haulage companies were interviewed to obtain results and all of these recorded better profits than last year, although most were of the opinion that profits should have been higher in view of the extra traffic being carried. The buoyancy of the market has allowed hauliers to look seriously at the low profit margin traffic. All the hauliers interviewed were satisfied that the Counter Inflation legislation had so far not acted very much to their detriment.

Copies of the survey may be obtained from Freight Information Services, Formby, Liverpool, L37 2JY. The price is £3.
