vehicle driving licence for driving a tractive unit without a trailer. I am under the impression that, provided no trailer is being towed, an hgv licence Is not necessary but I am told that this Is true only in certain circumstances. Could you please explain what those circumstances are?
AA Class I hgv licence is required to drive a heavy motor car so constructed that a trailer may by partial superimposition be attached to the vehicle in such a manner as to cause a substantial part of the weight of the trailer to be borne by the vehicle. In other words, if a tractive unit weighs more than 3 tons unladen, a Class I hgv licence is required to drive it whether it is drawing a trailer or not.
However, if it is a motor car, that is its unladen weight does not exceed 3 tons, then no hgv licence is required to drive it if it is not drawing a trailer. Exemption from the hgv licence requirements for a vehicle of that size in those circumstances is contained in Regulation 8(k) of the Heavy Goods Vehicles (Drivers' Licences) Regulations 1969.
If a tractive unit, being a motor ear, has an unladen weight not exceeding 2 tons and it is drawing a trailer, then a Class 4 hgv licence is required.
