FEARS that the implementation in October of the Benelux plan to standardize vehicle weights and dimensions regulations might hinder a later agreement among the six countries of the Common Market have Inspired the E.E.C. Commission to ask the Benelux countries to postpone their provisions until Japatary 1 next year.
In its recommendation on this question to the Benelux Economic Union Council of Ministers, the Commission recognizes that the Benelux proposals are an effort to create standardization, and that they do not worsen the present E.E.C. situation, but they are anxious to avoid the possibility of manufacturers and operators having to be asked to change their equipment yet again if the Community standards prove to be different from those now agreed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The Commission make it clear that they have no objection to the Benelux plans for forked rates and the abolition of quantitative transport restrictions being applied on October 1, as these are in line with the proposed E.E.C. common policy. They merely wish the vehicle regulations to be postponed until well after the transport session of the E.E.C. Council of Ministers on September 27.
