Nottingham Corporation by the local magistrates last week for using a lorry in a dangerous condition. The driver was granted an absolute discharge and ordered to pay 4s. costs.

The prosecution alleged that the lorry was laden with 5 tons of asphalt and that the rear, which was touching a Lyre, appeared to be in danger of collapse. When examined by an official inspector, it was found that the steering box was loose and dangerous. a spring leaf was broken and a rear wing fractured. A prohibition order was issued.

The Corporation pleaded guilty.

TO PRESS BONUS PLAN A T their meeting last week, Man chester Transport Committee decided to concentrate on gaining approval for their proposed incentive bonus scheme for bus crews. The scheme would increase the pay of drivers and conductors by between 10s. and 14s. a week.

The committee were considering the rejection by the Industrial Court of their plan to pay 2d. an hour more to their crews than the rate agreed by the National Joint Industrial Council for the road passenger transport industry (The Commercial Motor, July 6).

NEWSPAPER FLEETS NEW GARAGE

DESIGNED to make their transport section completely self-contained, a new garage costing £20,000 has been built by the Birmingham Gazette and Despatch, Ltd. The company have 90 vehicles, including 47 10-cwt. vans, lorries for wholesale distribution, a mobile photographic dark room and representatives' cars.

The new premises have storage for 5,000 gallons of petrol and 300 gallons of oil. Goods vehicles cover 26,000 miles a week, consuming about 1.000 gallons of petrol.

DELIVERIES START OF ASTRA

DELIVERIES began this week of the Astra utility, which was formerly known as the Jarc (The Commercial Motor. May 18). The Astra, which is marketed by the Astra Car Co., is being built by British Anzani Engineering Co., Hampton Hill. Middx.
