Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NUMBER of attractive features is I. embodied in a new replacement fitting for Ford 1-ton and 30-cwt. chassis, built after August, 1929, and. for Fordson 2-tonners, which has been introduced to the British market by R. M. Papelian, Ltd., Edgware Road, London, N.W.2. It is a Mechanics roller-bearing two-universal-joint propeller-shaft assembly, a product of the Borg-Warner International Corporation, of Chicago, for which the Papeban concern is sole representative for Great Britain and Ireland. The prices in this country are £5 15s. and £6 5s. for the short and long-wheelbase types respectively.

An accompanying drawing shows clearly the various features of the universal joint. A big bearing surface is afforded by the use of a large number of long small-diameter rollers; this practice also enables dimensions to be kept down. Lubricant is contained in a reservoir in the centre of the cross, whence a supply reaches the bearing surfaces through axial passages in the journals along which it tends to flow by centrifugal force.

Replenishments are fed to the reservoir by removing a plug at the centre, and, to protect the cork oil-retaining washers (at the inner ends of the races) from damage by excessive pressure during replenishment, a small oil-relief valve is incorporated.

End thrust is taken by the hardened faces of the journals, which bear against the ends of their housings in the arms of the yokes. The cross is made of high-quality steel, and is of sturdy design. Every part of the assembly is accurately machined all over and the whole carefully balanced.

Suitable, of course, for use on any of the specified chassis in standard form or on normal service, this Mechanics shaft assembly is particularly applicable for use on six-wheeler conversions of both the rigid and articulated types—in circumstances where stresses of more than normal severity are imposed upon the trans mission.
