Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

\ tyre explodes just as the ill-fated driver checked it. David Harris reports.

k YORKSHIRE DRIVER was illed last week when, having lost a 'heel, the tyre blew up in his face. Ben Parker, who worked for )hn Catlow and Sons of Forge ane, Leeds, was driving on the 162 near Pontefract when the heel came off, complete with the rake drum.

He stopped on the hard shouter; police say it seems he was illed when he went to look at the :tached tyre on the ground and it (ploded, striking him in the face. West Yorkshire police have asked VOSA to investigate the accident.

VOSA will not comment on the possible causes of the explosion before its investigation is complete. but previous accidents have demonstrated that over-heated tyres can become explosive.

In the United States 10 people a year are killed by exploding tyres, although this usually happens as the tyres are being inflated.

Tyre explosion due to overheating, known as pyrolysis, is a particular problem in the international mining industry. Last year the Canadian Mining Equipment Association warned: "Flammable gases, liquids and solids can be produced inside the tyre with very little visible evidence. Pyrolysis can convert a trusty, reliable tyre into a deadly bomb."

Richard Edy director of the National Tyre Distribution Association, says: "People don't always appreciate the dangers inherent in tyre pressures. If a tyre heats up and the air inside it expands it can easily cause a fatal accident." Richard Catlow. director at John Catlow and Sons, spoke to his driver minutes before he was killed. "The tyre came off after the wheel bearing collapsed," he reports. "Ben rang me as soon as he stopped on the hard shoulder to get someone out to fix the truck.

"I rang him back two minutes later to tell him someone was on their way and couldn't get an answer. He must already have gone to look at the tyre. The police think he put his head over it just as it blew up."
