• Southfields has developed an innovative trailer based on its Ultraloada for a contract serving Wickes. the DIY outlet chain.
The trailers have 10 foldaway top-deck sections fixed to a central spine running the length of the otherwise conventional 13.5m trailer, making it a mixed deck or a double-decker when required.
The extra flooring splits the 4.5m high trailer into a 1.6m-high lower deck and 1.3m-high upper deck. Southfields says each of the 10 fold-down sections can take up to 800kg. Flooring is held in place vertically against the spine's uprights using coil springs and secured by spigots. When needed, a section is lowered using a cord with its weight sup r ported by a box section pole. Southfields says one persor can operate this safely.
The 34 trailers used on the Wickes contract should help avoid bulking out; they should also cut the number of units needed and the number of deliveries to stores. The trailers will work out of three depots serving 128 UK stores.
