THE Ministry's proposed goods testing arrange' ments for Cumberland, Westmorland and the Furness area of Lancashire are causing concern to the Northern division of the Traders' Road Transport Association.
Northern divisional secretary Mr. Martin Richards said last week that so far only one testing station was under construction at Kingstown, Carlisle. Other stations were proposed For Newcastle, Berwick, Darlington, Preston and Skipton.
The TRTA's original proposal to the Ministry was that, in the majority of cases, no operator should have to travel more than 15 miles to a testing site.
At meetings of the West Cumberland area committee and the Northern divisional committee, concern had been expressed at the long distances operators in West Cupberland and the Furness area would have to travel if their vehicles were required to be tested at Carlisle.
They have suggested to the Ministry that additional facilities should be provided in the Workington-Whitehaven and Barrow-Ulverston vicinities, saving considerable expense and loss of vehicle and driving time.
