The Highways Agency and Freight Transport Association are In negotiations to increase the number of truckstops in order to solve the current HGV parking crisis. However, the Highways Agency warns that the haulage industry will need to pay towards any new facilities.
The talks stem from a study into HU parking conducted by the Highways Agency for Transport Minister John Speller. Full results from the study are yet to be published.
But the FTA's northern regional director Heather Crocker says the whole issue of truck parking needs to be looked at, and that this Initia
five would only be a short-term measure before addressing the bigger problem which includes parking in urban areas.
Jack Crossfield of the Drivers Action Movement, which has long campaigned for Improved parking facilities, believes the initiative is a delaying tactic to avoid examining the bigger picture.
To come up with a solution that puts more financial pressure on the industry is ridiculous. Drivers are already deterred from using truck stops due to the price."
He adds: "If anyone is to contribute to this, it should be the multinational stores or the shipping companies."
