VICE ERF ECX 6x4 Owner-driver Bob Wheeler from Portishead, North Somerset was determined to raise driving comfort levels when he replaced his old ERF EC8 sixwheeler two-years ago. He opted for an ECX 6x4 with SMC high roof twin-bunk Olympic cab, with heated windscreen and walnut dash. He also liked the 380hp Cummins Mn, but not so the ZF gearbox or front disc brakes; he prefers the simplicity of the Roadranger and drums all-round.

He went the whole hog with shiny Alcoas, Eminox stack, extra fights. Jake brake and an attractive paintjob.

Most of Wheeler's work involves the bulk delivery of Cummins engines to demonstrations or show events, hence the substantial Boalloy flatbed body and radio-controlled rear-mounted 14t/m Hiab XS 144 loading crane.

• Owned by Lynne and Henry Dilloway, SA Trucks has held the ERF franchise for Wales and the South-West region for the last six years.

It's also a Daewoo dealer—a brand that, with its Cummins/ZF driveiine, has a certain familiarity about it.

This former Seddon Atkinson dealer and i_ex group member now occupies a huge 26,000ft2 workshop on a three-acre site in Avonmouth's Third Way trading estate.

There are two spacious triple-bay workshops, one adapted as a Pet-Reg facility, plus a purpose-built double bay which is equipped for brake testing, tachograph and speed limiter work.

The latter building also has the latest generation of Siemens VDO tacho calibration system facilities, in anticipation of the changeover to digital units in new vehicles from August 2004.

Apart from three apprentices undergoing training (via the MAN-approved S&B Training Centre), 15 highly-skilled artisans work at the sharp end. One is sharp-eyed senior mechanic Clive Vokins, who kindly showed CMa few of his safety tips.
