75 years ago 28 February 1928

MPs called upon the government to adopt measures to reduce the number of accidents on the UK's roads after figures showed that during 1926, there had been 4,886 deaths and 133,888 injuries. Colonel Ashley MP said that one of the effects of the Road Transport Lightning Act, which was due to come into force in April, would be to increase the safety of the public roads. He said that grants were also being made available from the Road Fund to assist local authorities to carry out improvements, which were desirable on the grounds of public safety.

50 years ago 27 February 1953

The number of commercial vehicles exported from the UK in 1952 fell by 5,671 to just 137,761 compared to a year earlier. However, the value of exports jumped ifo.7m to set a new record. Australia continued to be Britain's best customer for CVs, followed by South Africa and New Zealand. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' figures showed that the year's production was boosted by an increase in heavy goods and pedestrian-controlled vehicles.

The South Eastern Traffic officer warned operators that anyone applying for a new Operator's Licence, renewing an existing licence, or anyone who wanted to carry for hire and reward would have to prove that he was professionally competent, or employed by someone who was. Henry Mackie told the Solent division of the Freight Transport Association that although there had been problems in implementing the new 0licence rules, they were being resolved by the Department of Transport. Most staff would be considered competent by virtue of previous transport management experience, or would be exempted by having an appropriate professional qualification.
