Volkswagen has unveiled its new Transporter T5 more than four months ahead of its scheduled UK launch and before its final specification has been decided.

The latest reincarnation of the frontwheel drive Transporter begins a threeyear programme which sees the Caddy high-cube van replaced next year and the IT panel van range in 2006. VW's UK head of marketing, David Williams, says the T5's specification and price tag are yet to be decided but operators should be able to snap one up by late summer. Specifications to be decided include which GVW ratings, engines and optional extras will be on offer In the UK. The German manufacturer will build the T5 at four weight categories between 2.6 and 3.4 tonnes.

The complete engine range for Europe starts with a 113hp four-cylinder petrol engine with 170Nm maximum torque and five-speed transmission. The entry-level 1.9-litre diesel engines are rated at 84hp with 20011m torque, and 103hp with 250Nm torque respectively, fitted with a five-speed box.

Further up the scale are the more powerful 2.5-litre five-cylinder diesel engines with 129hp and 340Nm torque or 172hp and a massive 400Nin peak torque respectively. All of the new diesel engines have the PD unit injection fuel system. Top of the range is a 3.2-litre V6 227hp petrol engine with 315Nm torque. Volkswagen will be specifying a six-speed gearbox with its five and six-cylinder engines.

The basic Transporters dimensions will be 4.89m in length, 1.91m wide and 1.96m high. Variations on this include an extra 400mm of length and height options of 2.16m or 2.46m. The UK will see two wheelbases, three roof options, a Tiptronic automatic transmission and a manual 4x4 as well as the chassis-cab version and the Muitimax chassis option.
