Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• MAN/ERF has announced it is to use its in-house telematics system to provide a new contract hire package based on the distances actually driven by truck operators. The new Vence-per-kilometre' package uses the MAN telematics system to allow the company to remotely access odometer readings once a month for billing purposes.

The system has already been trialled by two users running ERF ECT trucks and is now being made available on a wider basis.

Mike Learning, general manager at MAN Telematics says pence-per-kilometre financing has been tried by the industry in the past based on physical odometer inspections, but that getting to the vehicle every month proved difficult. Use of the telematics system gets round this and means that anyone taking up the finance package already has a telematics system installed if they wish to use it for their own purposes.

Elliot Lennick, MD of MAN Financial Services, says the new scheme means users will pay for a truck's fixed costs upfront, with running costs paid in arrears based on actual usage.

The scheme isn't really about raising or lowering the costs of contract hire, he adds, but rather about ensuring that they accurately reflect truck usage and about easing cashflow pressures on operators. "If a customer is busy, he'll pay more that month; and when its quiet, he'll pay less," he says. He adds that the system should do away with the need for 'balancing' payments based on excess mileage at the end of a contract, and will also help operators see clearly which vehicles are doing the most work at any one time.

• MAN/ERF has also just introduced a new trailer tracking system. The system consists of a battery-powered tracking box with an integrated GPS locator The unit is accessed daily to report its position. teeming says the unit will be positioned according to trailer type but most probably situated in the roof. Battery power is topped up when the trailer is connected to a tractive unit, he adds.
