Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

▪ As revealed by CM, Daf is

experimenting with turbocompound versions of its forthcoming big-block truck engine, and has developed a coupling which it believes overcomes some of the drawbacks of turbocompound designs.

In a turbocompound system a second turbine downstream of the standard turbocharger extracts extra power from the exhaust gases and feeds it back to the crankshaft.

The geartrain on Daf's engine takes power from the second turbine to the flywheel which incorporates a freewheeling "sprag clutch". The freewheel device is used to disengage the geartrain at low engine loads when the turbocompound turbine is not providing any useful power to the flywheel.

Daf's engineers had found that turbocompounding only gave benefits when the engine was running at above 80% of its full load; at lower loads than this
