PERMISSION must first be obtained from the Customs and Excise before adding paraffin to diesel fuel, to stop it freezing.

This warning was given in the Commons by John MacGregor, Under-Secretary for Industry, who pointed out that at around -7 degrees Centigrade wax crystals started to form in the oil, which then clogged the fuel system.

This could be prevented if a small amount of paraffin was added before the wax started to form.
