THE United Kingdom spent ,nearly £15,000 million on moving people and goods by road in 1974.

Dr John Gilbert, the Minister for Transport, said in the Commons last week that total spending on road passenger movement had been £7,050m —£6,400m of which went on cars and taxis and £650m on buses and coaches. Total spending on road goods movement including purchase of vehicles, was £7,760m.

The Minister added that roads and their policing in Great Britain during the financial year 1974-75 had cost over £1,000m.

Road capital had totalled £700m, maintenance £350m, lighting £50m and policing £70m.
