TN the year to March 31, 1947, the net

expenditure from the Road Fund, mainly on maintenance and minor improvements, amounted to £16,851,552. compared with £9,069,633 in the preceding year. A balance of £376,932 remained in the Fund. A sum of £360,800 was expended on the road safety campaign.

These facts are contained in the Road Fund Accounts, 1946-47, which have just been published by the Stationery Office at 2d.

CHINA CUTS IMPORTS

TO conserve foreign exchange, the National Economy Council has reduced to 74,720,000 U.S. dollars the exchange available for Chinese imports in the first and second quarters of 1948. Imports of commercial vehicles will be limited to about 200,000 dollars, but Diesel oil is allotted 18,000,000 dollars. The allocation for Diesel oil is the largest individual quota. The quota for petrol is 5,000,000 dollars.
