AUSTRIA SPEED TRAPS

• There are said to be 14 radar traps on the Austrian A2 to the South between Gleisdorf and Hartberg. Until this semi-motorway is completed, these radar traps should help to keep drivers' speeds within the limit on this stretch of road which has been the scene of several serious accidents.

SPAIN SALES UP

• Spanish truck manufacturers in all sectors did well in the first half of 1986. Production of small transporters was up 51%, that of light commercials up to nine tonnes by 8.9% and that of heavy trucks by 26%.

HUNGARY ORIENTAL

• RABA, the Hungarian Railway Carriage and Machine Works at Gyor, has assembled mobile (that is complete) Type B 147-60 undercarriages for buses for the Chinese market. "These undercarriages can be included in the company's long-term programmes, since their main units — transmission machinery, brake and steering systems, spring mechanism and electric system — represent state of the art. In fact, the variable wheelbase, rear-drive bus undercarriage is included in the firm's future projects. These undercarriages make the production of 11 and 12-metrelong coaches possible." RUSSIA DUMPER

• A new _120-tonne quarry dump-truck is to be built at the Byelorussian Automobile Works in the Soviet Union. The truck will be lighter than the previous 110-tonne model, and will be equipped with a more powerful 895kW (1,200hp) engine in which the electric starting system has been replaced by a pneumatic one. In addition, an oil-towater heat exchanger will be introduced, thus making the truck more economic and capable of smooth operation in the quarries of Siberia and the north of the Soviet Union. During the current five-year period, the Byelorussian Automobile Works plans to modify every heavy-duty truck model and construct a prototype of a super-heavy 280-tonne truck.

USA UNSAFE TRUCKS

• More than half the 3,811 trucks which were the object of spot-checks in New York State during the past six months were found to be faulty. Of 2,300 faulty

AUSTRALIA LIFTING

• A container-handling lift truck with a rated load capacity of 37 tonnes at 1,250mm load centres on 2,440mm forks is to be distributed in Australia by Mebam Equipment Pty. The new machine, a TCM F1J370. powered by a turbocharged 13.7 litre in-line sixcylinder Isuzu diesel engine developing 204kW (275hp) at 2,00Orpm.
