Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

dearer .fuel

THE recently announced increases in the cost of fuel will be much more significant for the operator of petrolengined vehicles than for those operating diesels. The variation in Value Added Tax on petrol to 25 per cent in Mr Healey's November Budget loads the increase in petrol prices still further, for VAT on dery then remained at the existing rate of 8 per . cent.

Thus, with petrol costing at least 72p a gallon at the pump and the cost of dery in the region of 57p the extra margin for profit which the fuel distributors say they must have to remain viable must be added.

The effect of even these prices adds quite considerably to running costs for commercial vehicle operators.

For a one-ton capacity petrol enginecl vehicle the additional cost will be 0.45p a mile where the fuel consumption averages 22mpg and for the corresponding diesel vehicle the increase will be 0.10p. A 5-ron capacity petrol vehicle at 10 mpg will incur extra costs of I p a mile and a similar diesel engined unit 0.19p a mile.

In the larger vehicle range, a 32-ton artic averaging 7mpg will incur an extra 0.43p a mile.
