When does an attendant become necessary when a vehicle is being operated under the Special Types Order?

A Article 24 of the Motor , Vehicles (Authorization of Special Types) General 'Order 1973 lays down the requirements for attendants.
An attendant is required when vehicles are authorized under Article 20 or 21, that is, carrying or drawing abnormal indivisible loads and when the vehicle is classified as engineering plant or the width of the vehicle together with any lateral projection of the load exceed 3.5m (lift 5.796 in) or the overall length of the vehicle together with any forward or rearward projection exceeds 18.3m (60 ft 0.468 in).
If a vehicle is drawing a trailer or trailers and the load rests on more than one of the vehicles (whether an artic combination or not) if the overall length of the trailer together with any forward and rearward pro jection exceeds 18.3m an attendant must be carried. Similarly with any other combination of vehicles, though in this case the stipulation is the overall length of the vehicles together with the distance between the vehicles and the length of forward and rearward projections.
An attendant is also necessary when a motor vehicle is drawing a trailer or trailers and the overall length of the combination of vehicles together with the length of any projection beyond the foremost point of the drawing vehicle and beyond the rearmost point of the rear vehicle exceeds 25.9m (84ft I 1-.688 in).
The final requirement for an attendant under the Order is when a vehicle authorized under Article 20 or 21 is carrying a load having a forward projection exceeding 1.83 m (oft 0.048 in) or a rearward projection exceeding 3.05m (10ft 0.084 in) or is fitted with a special appliance or apparatus having such projection.
