Munich, which has several very long road underpasses crossing the railway yards outside the main station, this month originated what is believed to be Europe's first "anti-smog" fare.
To give pedestrians the chance to avoid having to walk through the exhaust-laden atmosphere of the tunnels public transport stops in the vicinity have been provided with machines issuing special tunnel tickets. These are valid for unlimited use during the day of issue at a reduced fare of only 30 pfennigs (about 5p). The ticket allows the holder accompanied by wife/husband or dog to travel to the first stop after the tunnel exit.
