Suggestions that refuse collection vehicles of improved types might be imported into the United States from Europe, or manufactured in the USA, under licence, were made in a report recently issued by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Criticisms of the American compaction vehicles was made on the score of slowness of operation and noise. Controlled tipping was felt to be below European standards in many areas whilst incineration plant in general was less advanced. Since the amount of refuse is increasing rapidly in America, as it is in Britain, city officials there are now studying the comments with some interest.
