Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The North Western Traffic Commissioners granted applications-for one year-from four undertakings and their joint operators for fares increases in Manchester last Friday.

In order to facilitate the introduction of one-man operation, Mr. F. Mantle, general manager, Warrington Corporation Transport Department, told the Commissioners that it wished to reorganize its stages so that only six fares remain-4d, 7d, 9d, 1s, 1s 2d. and 1s. 4d. This would involve increases of between ld and 3d but some would remain unchanged.

Two routes were already converted to o-m-o and since two new vehicles had recently been delivered, these would be introduced on evening services after Christmas. The new fares would be introduced on December 29.

If the department continued on its present structure, it was estimated there would be a £49,000 trading deficit at March 31 1969.

Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Transport and Electricity Board wished to retain the 3d minimum for 0.5 mile and to abolish all odd denominations. The 4d, 6d, 8d and 10d stages will be reduced by 0.1 mile and all fares over 1s will buy 0.5 miles less under the new structure. No fares will be increased by more than 2d.

St. Helens Corporation applied to introduce a 4d minimum for 1 mile and increase all other fares by ld or 2d.

Rosendale Joint Transport Committee sought to increase all fares between 3d and 1s by 1d, those between 1s 1d and 1a 5d by 2d and the 1s 6d fare by 3d.
