• Bus and rail fares, together with freight charges, will be increased by Coras lompair Eireann, the State-owned transport undertaking in the Irish Republic, within the next few weeks. On Dublin bus services the minimum fare will be raised from 4d to 6d and on suburban routes stages will be shortened while fares are increased by 2d in the 1s.
Despite a £2 million subvention from the Government, CIE faces a deficit of nearly £1 million. It claims the increases are needed to cover higher pay and pensions given to the employees.
