Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• "Glad tidings of comfort and joy"; how often we have heard that sentiment expressed in recent daysl And if there is one sector of industry in need of glad tidings it is road transport. The effect of the economic squeeze has been felt generally in industry but the unknown effect of the Transport Act 1968 adds to the discomfort of transport men.

Yet it is to the Transport Act that we turn today for crumbs of comfort, if not joy. Section 33 of the Act lays down the conditions for payment of grants towards duty charged on bus fuel.

The duty imposed on diesel fuel is 4s 4d per gallon, which includes the 4.7d added on November 23. From January 1 1969 the Finance Act of 1965 authorizing grants will be amended to the effect that operators will be able to claim a grant but will pay at least 2s of the duty. In terms of hard cash this means that for every gallon of fuel used on a stage carriage service there is a rebate of 2s 3.7d. Until the November mini-budget the amount rebatable was Is 2d per gallon; this was subsequently increased to Is 6.7d.
