Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE disastrous" balance sheet of East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., was mentioned at Bridlington last week, when the company asked the Yorkshire Traffic Comen:s,ioners for fare increases designed to yield an extra £37,250 a year. Profit for the last year was only £3,550. said Mr. F. A. Stockdale, who put forward East Yorkshire's case.

"We must get our finances right if we are to give the services to East Yorkshire that we have done in the past," he declared. "The company have been at pains to emphasize the seriousness of their financial position, and the withdrawal of some of their services may he inevitable."

He asked for increases on 83 services in East and West Yorkshire. Fares up to 2s. would go un by not more than Id.; from 2s. Id. to 3s. by up to 2d.; 3s. Id. to 4s. by up to 3d.; and above 4s. Id. by up to 4d.

The Commissioners were told that the application was really a continuation of one heard in September, when it was forecast that the company would have to seek further increases before the end of the year. There were objections from local authorities at Beverley, Hedon and Withernsea. Maj. F. S. Eastwood, chairman, said he would not accept Hedon as objectors. Specific grounds of objection had not been given and their letter had only a rubber-stamp signature. He thought the Commissioners should at least have had the courtesy of a letter signed by the town clerk.

Decision was reserved on the fare question, but the Commissioners authorized reduced services on 11 routes covering Hull, Goole, Selby and certain other areas.

Salford to Apply Salford Transport Department is to seek increases based on a new mileage scale, to offset an estimated loss of £77,000 on the current year's working If the application is granted, no fare will go up by more than Id., and the 2d. minimum will be retained for journeys of up to 0.7 mile. Morning concessions will be abolished.

Coventry Transport Committee decided not to seek increases after hearing that figures had proved satisfactory in recent months. Cir. W. R. Jones, chairman, said, however, that the returns would not be sufficient to provide for the reserves and for new vehicles on the scale that had been expected.
