An energetic protest at what he described as " the frivolous objection of the railway companies " to the applications of small village hauliers, was made at a sitting of the East Midland Licensing Authority by Mr. Cecil Bray, solicitor for an applicant of Oakham, Rutland, who applied for an additional vehicle. Mr. Bray said that his client conveyed material which the railway company could not possibly carry to the villages around Oakham.

In another case, Mr. Bray stated that, although the railway companies objected to the grant of an additional vehicle to a Lutterworth haulier who had been in business 40 years, the applicant carried 3,000 tons of coal annually from an L.N.E.R. station.

Papers on Bearings Before I.A.E.

At a meeting of the Institution of Automobile Engineers to be held at the James Watt Memorial Hall, York House, Birmingham, on January 2E, 1936, at 7.30 p.m., two papers will be read on the subject of bearings. One, by Mr. M. Melhuish, of the Glacier Metal Co., Ltd., is entitled "White Metal and Bronze Bearings from the Manufacturer's Point of View," and the other, by Mr. C. H. Smith, A.M.I.Mech.E., of the Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd., is entitled " Needle Roller Bearings." The former will also be read in Coventry on February 11 and in Glasgow on February 17, and the latter in Derby on January 21 and in Leeds on February 19.
