Wages Appeal Decisions Announced

ELECTRICARS INTRODUCES MECHANICAL HORSE.

An electric mechanical horse has been produced by Electricars, Ltd., and an example has recently been purchased by Westminster City Council for use with electrically operated gullyemptying equipment. The tractor has also been employed with a refusecollection semi-trailer, and the results have been so satisfactory that the works committee has recommended that the replacement of some of the older refuse vehicles should be deferred pending further experimehts with an electric. For this purpose it is recommended that an Electricar mechanical horse, having a semi-trailer equipped with consolidating apparatus, should be acquired at a cost of £1,200.

Leader Tipper Down in Price.

Morris 'Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, announces a reduction in the price of its Leader 4-ton tipper, the four-cylinder model now selling at £335 instead of £345, and the six-cylinder model at £343 instead of £353.

Foden's New London Service Depot.

Fodens, Ltd., of Sandbach, has recently opened a new service and repair depot at Eleanor Street, Bow, London, E.3. A comprehensive stock of spare parts for the servicing of steam and oil-engined vehicles of Foden make is available and expert mechanics are in attendance to deal with repairs of all kinds, whilst thorough overhauls can also be undertaken. A day and night service is being offered at the new depot.

Gifford Company to be Wound Up?

An extraordinary general meeting of the Gilford Motor Co., Ltd., will be held at Winchester House, Old Broad Street, London, E.C.2, on December 31, at 2 p.m., for the purpose of considering and, if thought fit, of passing a resolution for voluntary winding up.

In our issue dated November 29 we referred to the fact that Mr, G. L. G. Touche, Basildon House, Moorgate, London, -E.C.2, had been appointed receiver and Manager to protect the interests of the• debenture holders, AS foreshadowed in last week's issue, the National Joint Conciliation Board announced yesterday (Monday) the decisions of its appeals committee on the appeals of the Northern, NorthWestern, South-Eastern, East Midland and Eastern Area Boards concerning final grading for wages purposes. In addition, Sir Richard Redmayne, chairman, issued his independent award on the appeal of the Yorkshire Board, because the appeals committee could not reach an agreement.

In view of the fact that so little time remains between the publication of the decisions and the end of the present interim period on December 31, the committee has recommended the Board to extend the date of operation of the awards in the North-Western and East Midland Areas to March 31 next. The committee also recommends that the operative date in the Northern, Eastern and South-Eastern Areas shall be September 30.

Sir Richard Redmayne suggests September 30 as the operative date in the Yorkshire Area. Any increase in pay required under the awards shall be made on the first pay day subsequent to the operative date in the area concerned. The results are as follow Northern Area Tyne, Tees and Wear induatrial areas, Grade I (definition of areas to be determined by Area Board). Western portion of Northern. Area, including Carlisle; Maryport, Whitehaven, Workington, Cleator Moor.; Barrow-in-Furness and other districts placed in Grade II for interim period, Grade Si (Area' Board shall determine whether any or all of -this district shall be Grade I). Remainder of area, Grade 111, North-Western Area: Liverpool. Birkenhead, Merseyside. Manchester, Salford, Trafford Park and general dock area, Grade I (decision to plate' Liverpool, Birkenhead and Merseyside in Grade I shall not prejudice agreement now in operation in that district). Area Board shall determine what other towns or districts in industrial area shall be added t,o Grade I, or shall remain in Grade It and III respectively.

Setith-Eaiteni Area: Southampton and Portsmouth, Grade I; Poole, Parkstone, Bournemouth and Reading. Grade 11 (area that these towns shall cover to be determined by Area Board). Area east of the Chichester-Haslemere-London road, including all coast towns, towns bordering Metropolitan Area and those in the Medway area, Grade II; Area Board shall have power to determine whether any part of foregoing area outside towns specified shall be Grade III. Area west of Chichester.11aslemere-London road, with foregoing exceptions, Grade III, East Midland Area: Nottingham and Leicester, Grade I. Derby, for the time being, Grade II (Area Board shall determine whether Derby shall be Grade 51. Remainder of Derbyshire. Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, west of line drawn from Bawtry, Retford, Southwell and Melton Mowbray, and thence to boundary where East Midland Area joins Eastern Area, Grade 1.1. Lincolnshire and east of above line, Grade with exception of following towns, which shall be Grade II:—Scunthorpe, Lincoln, cleethorpes, Boston, Grimsby and Grantham. Grade II within 15 miles of Wellingborough. Oxford, Grade II. Remainder ot East Midland Area, Grade III.

Eastern Area: Ipswich, Chelmsford, Braintree, Southend and district, Great Yarmouth, Norwich, King's Lynn, and Peterborough, Grade II farea that these towns shall cover to be decided by Area Board). Remainder of area, Grade Yorkshire Area: Area within radius of five miles of centre of Hull, the towns of Bradford, T.eeds, Halifax, linddersiield, Penistone, Doncaner. Rotherham, Sheffield and Chesterfield and area between and surrounding those towns, Grade I (Ares Board to determine precise boundary of industrial area shown on accompanying map—Brad ferd-Chesterfield—provided that variation from that set out does not exceed five miles from one side or the other. Remainder of Vorkshire to be graded as at present, namely Grade II in other industrial areas and Grade ILI in rural areas.

In all cases where operators are picking up or setting down goods in higher-. rated -areas, the higher rates must be paid; this principle must be appliedthroughout every area,
