Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The report of the Stockport Corporation for the year ended March 31st last, which has just been issued, shows that the traffic revenue on the buses was £10,253, this being equivalent to 12,508d. per bus-mile. During the year the vehicles covered 195,839 miles, the number of buses actually in stock during the period being 18.

So far as expenditure is concerned, £2,677 was disbursed in connection with maintenance and repairs, including renewals out of revenue, £5,019 in connection with traffic expenses, £1,241 for general expenses, whilst £1,958 was expended on the purchase of petrol. The total working expenses 'thus Came to £10,895, equivalent to 13.287d. per busmile. The balance per bus-mile was thus .779d. The buses operate over a route mileage of 7.72 and are in use on several routes,

The Stockport Corporation commenced the operation of buses in October, 1919, and it uses a number of 29-seater Leyland Lion single-deckers.

Conductors on Excursion Buses.

Owners of motorbuses hired fOr the conveyance of excursion parties have been fined in Northern Ireland because the vehicles were not carrying conductors. It is contended that motorbuses and motor coaches chartered for excursions are not plying for hire in the ordinary way and, therefore, do not

need to carry conductors. It is proposed to obtain a High Court decision On the matter.

Inst. A.B. Papers.

At a general meeting of the Institution of Automobile Engineers, to be held on January 3rd at the Royal Society of Arts, Adelphi, London, W.C., Mr. C. R. P. Engelbach will read a paper entitled " Some Notes on Reorganizing a Works to Increase Produc tion." An interesting paper, entitled " The Electrical Characteristics of Spark Gaps and Sparking Plugs," will be read by Mr. E. A. Watson before the Bristol Centre of the Institution on January 2nd, at the Merchant Venturers Technical College, and before the Wolverhampton branch on January 17th, at the Engineering Club, Queen Street. Mr. M. Platt will read a paper entitled "The Viewpoint of the Ownerdriver" at a meeting of the Coventry centre on January 10th.

Overall Lengths in Worcestershire.

The highways committee of the Worcestershire County Council reports that a communication has been received from the Associated Daimler Co., Ltd., Birmingham, stating that under the Heavy Motor Car Order, 1927, the overall length of single and dortbie-deck buses had been ullctioned by the Minis try of Transport as 27 ft. 0 ins. At

the same time it was indicated that local licensing -authorities throughout the country could use their discretion to refuse to licence buses having a greater overall length than 26 ft. on the ground that local conditions were against the use of buses in excess of that length, and the company asked whether there was any possibility of vehicles being licensed in Worcestershire up to a length of 27 ft. 6 ins. The committee recommended that the overall length of vehicles licensed in the County should not exceed 26 ft.

Some Recent Vulcan Orders.

Amongst the ordors recently received by the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co. (19(1), Ltd. are those for sixwheelers for the War Office, India Office and South Africa, a number of 2-tan chassis for the Malay States, buses for the China Bus Co., Hong Kong, and Belford Omnibus Co., bus chassis for the Manchester Corporation, and lowloading lorries for the Dublin Dock and Harbour Board and the Peterborough Co-operative Society.

Seeking the Public's Help.

ManxIand Motor Services, Ltd., of Douglas, bile of Man, an associated company of the Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., is exhibiting in its vehicles and on its various stations posters asking passengers to state their Preference for 20-seater or 28-seater

buses. If they are in favour of 28seater buses they are asked to sign a petition to the Governor, the council and the House of Keys. This petition has been prepared by the company's solicitors with a view to letting the Legislature know the wishes of passengers on this vexed question.

Royal Assent was recently given to the Now Highways Act, which limits the number of seats in a bus to; 20. An amending Bill has been introduced into the Legislature, and will come before

both branches of the Legislature in the early part of next season, in which power is sought to increase the seating capacity of stage coaches to 28.

All that the Manlland Motor Services, Ltd., is asking is that the seating capacity be extended to gs so as to enable it to utilize the buses which have been running with such success since last spring.

A Bariruar Price List.

A price list which Barimar, Ltd., 14-18, Lamb's Conduit Street, Louden, W.C.1, has just issued, deals with all kinds of repair work which the company is in a position to undertake. It contains particulars of the reduced prices for cylinder and crankshaft grinding, the remetalling of bearings and overhauling of engines, whilst the prices of lightweight de luxe pistons, domed mudguards for replacement purposes and cast-aluminium number plates are referred to. A copy of the list can be obtained by writing to the company.

New Services at Woking.

Woking Urban District Council has been informed that the Aldershot and District Traction Co., Ltd., proposes to apply for new services as fallow :—(1) Woking-Ottershaw-Chertsey ; (2) Woking Ottershaw Addlestone Weybridge ; (3). Woking-Byfieet-Weybridge; (4) Guildford-Send-Old Woking-RyfleetWeybridge.

A Licence Transference.

Blyth Licensing Committee has agreed that all bus licences now in the name of G. B. Middleton, receiver for W. Scott and Co., be transferred to Dr. A. Taylor, who has taken over the business.
